Trail Runner’s Review: Gnarly Nutrition Hydrate

Sarah Barber reviews Gnarly Nutrition Hydrate: Salted Margarita (with extra sodium) having received product at no charge. Sarah is an avid trail runner and writer. She enjoys testing and reviewing products for ATRA.

Setting the stage…

It’s the middle of July in Arizona. You’re ten miles in with at least six to go. Your technical fabric top doesn’t know what “moisture-wicking” means anymore. The white sweat streaks on your visor tell the story: you need an electrolyte drink, and you need it now. What flavor would bring you the most joy?

Ask and answered…

Gnarly Nutrition asked, and the people answered. After surveying nearly 500 loyal customers, Gnarly learned that those white sweat streaks weren’t on your visor after all—they were on your sombrero! It turns out that Salted Margarita sounded best to most runners, and it’s really no surprise. Who doesn’t love a little fiesta in the middle of a run? So Gnarly took their proven Hydrate drink mix, doubled the sodium content and added a twist of lime. And then someone in marketing must have looked at the calendar and realized that with Cinco de Mayo fast approaching, the time for this new product to launch is now.

The formula…

Gnarly Nutrition stuck with their tried-and-true formula of B vitamins, magnesium, and just enough sugar to sweeten the deal. As such, plan on supplementing with chips and salsa if your energy demands are high, but for hydration, you’re covered. The only disappointment is that the Salted Margarita flavor of Hydrate is billed as a “limited edition,” which just means that stockpiling and hoarding are acceptable behaviors. The only remaining question is whether adding a shot of tequila is also an acceptable behavior. Maybe post-run? I’m not afraid to try it!
