Caumsett 50K to host national championships on Sunday

The USATF 50K Road Championships / Caumsett 50K will take place this Sunday, March 6, at Caumsett State Park, Lloyd’s Harbor, Long Island, New York.

The Greater Long Island Running Club has hosted the USATF 50K Road Championships for the past ten years, while the Caumsett Park 50K will celebrate its 13th running in ’16. The race takes place on the former estate of Marshall Field, the department store magnate, with views of Long Island Sound. The course is ten, 5K loops with minimal elevation gain, but the roads do allow runners the opportunity to see each other at a few points. Weather conditions are forecast for 38 at race start, with a chance of rain and a high of 46 degrees.

The course record was broken last year by Zach Ornelas (pictured above), a member of the 2013 US Mountain Running Team, from Ann Arbor, MI, with a time of 2:52:16. Zach is returning to defend his title and intent on breaking Josh Cox’s 50K American record, 2:47:17, which would earn him a bonus of $1,000 for the CR and $1,500 for the AR. He took the Course Record away from Ethan Coffey, last year, who had run 2:53:32.

Emily Harrison‘s race record of 3:15:00 is also on the line, as Caroline Boller, Solvang, CA attempts to gain the national title. Bonuses are also offered for female CR and AR performances. The American 50K record, set by Janis Klecker, stands at 3:13:51

In addition to the overall categories at the USATF 50K Road Championships, age group championships will be contested in 5 year age groups beginning with 40-44 and going through 70+.You can get more information at www.usaultrarunning.com and get the post-race recap there.
