Team USA nets 8 medals at World Mountain and Trail Running Championships

Four days of action wrapped up today, September 28, in Canfranc, Spain, at the World Trail and Mountain Running Championships with Team USA securing eight medals at the competition.

An individual bronze by Anna Gibson and a team bronze for the men’s team on Thursday, at the Uphill 6K started the podium tally. On Saturday, four medals were added to the count with individual gold for Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide and team silver for the men and women in the 82K Long Trail race. Today, the women’s team captured a silver medal in the Classic 14K race.

Team USA was just shy of the podium at the Short Trail 45K on Friday, with fourth place team finishes for the men and women.

These results provided Team USA with a bronze medal in the Overall Federation Team Award with a mark of 4279 points behind gold medalist France with 4333 points and silver medalist Italy with 4315 points.

U20 and Classic Race – Team USA results

The 7K U20 races kicked off the final day of competition. Team USA women secured a solid fifth place finish led by Sophia Rodriguez in 14th place. Teammates Sierra Wall, Ruby Ihmels and Abby Stone posted 21st, 25th and 38th on the day.

The USA men also finished fifth among the teams with two men in the top ten. Asher Oates in 7th and Cadel Ruthven in 9th. Noah McMahan was third for team USA in 19th, followed by Zeke Wilcox in 38th.

The 14K Classic races saw Team USA women in silver-medal position with Lauren Gregory in fifth followed by Anna Gibson and Courtney Coppinger in 13th and 14th respectively and Allie McLaughlin in 26th.

In the men’s race, Taylor Stack finished 12th followed closely by Mason Coppi in 14th. Cam Smith finished 24th and David Norris in 36th.

In the U20 race, there were 61 finishers in the women’s race and 80 finishers in the men’s race. For the Classic, there were 110 finishers in the women’s race and 136 finishers in the men’s race.
