run through the iconic 42 Traverse, Tongariro Forest, Central Plateau. Also 6.5km trail fun run/walk.
This much-loved event started in 2010 and for over a decade brought adventurous kiwis together from all over the country to spend time together on some of the best trails around. Covid did its thing and we lost a year in 2020, and then the 42 Traverse track suffered some severe damage a few years back, the result being a massive slip on the track, which affects the signature MTB and Marathon events.
Since then the T42 event has struggled somewhat. Without the full access to the 42 Traverse track the event isn’t the same as it was and the last three years entry numbers have declined rapidly. The event has sustained some major financial losses during that time. Total Sport is not is a position to absorb any more losses, and while DOC continue to explore options to address the slip, sadly we have made the tough decision to not proceed with putting the event on in the foreseeable future.
If and when the 42 Traverse track is repaired and back to what is was, we’d love to think we could jump back in there and reinstate the event. Until then we’ll put our heads together and see if there are other MTB event options we could deliver. We’re sad to be delivering this news and also hopeful that you understand how and why we got to making this decision. The T42 is an event that our team has always held really fondly in our hearts, along with the thousands of people that have done it over the years.
