Louisiana Forklore History
Père Malfait – Cajun Boogeyman

The pere malfait is another swamp creature. Its name translates to “father of mischief.” Though it’s also known as “Father of the Bad Leaves,” or Moss Man. Pere malfait is a large humanoid creature covered in Spanish moss, or other swamp foliage, with glowing eyes.

Sometimes the pere malfait vanishes after its spotted, leaving a pile of moss/foliage behind.

Like the loup-garou, the pere malfait originated in France. Parents told stories about the beast to keep their children in line.

Bussey Brake Trail
An 8-mile trail which follows the top of the reservoir levee is available for hiking, biking (non-motorized bikes only), and horseback riding. The WMA is ideal for birdwatching, especially for waterfowl in the winter. Very flat trail that runs around Bussey Brake Reservoir. You will have holes through out the trail with giant ant piles. Somewhat of terrain. Two aid stations. Fully manned is at start/finish with hot food. On course is around 4 mile with ice, water, electrolytes, and snacks. Front side of course is not covered. You will be exposed to sun. Back side has shade.

Location
Bussey Brake WMA is located 5 miles northwest of Bastrop off of Bonner Ferry Road (LA Hwy 593). Two parking areas (north and south) are located on the west side of the highway. The self-clearing permit station is located at the north parking area.
