2023 Little River Trail Runs
In-Person Race Saturday, January 7, 2023
Hybrid Event January 7 through January 16

2023We will offer both in-person races (10 mile and 7k) on Saturday, January 7, 2023 AND a hybrid event (the course will be marked from 12pm on January 7 through 5pm on January 16), so runners can choose what sort of race they’d like to run.

In-Person Race Times: Saturday, January 7, 2023

10 mile: 9:00am Orange Flags

7k: 9:30am Blue Flags

Hybrid Event: Saturday, January 7, 2023 after 12pm – Monday, January 16, 2023 during Park Hours (8am – 5pm)

Location. The race will be held at the beautiful Little River Regional Park, on the border between Durham and Orange Counties. The park offers visitors over 15 miles of single-track trails, comfortable pavilions for picnics, and a playground for kids (the River Rambler is a great online newsletter for Little River Regional Park).

As always, race proceeds benefit Little River Regional Park. Over the last 17 years, our event has resulted in over $127,000 in donations to the park. Please help us to continue to support Little River Regional Park and local single track trails!

COVID Safety. In an effort to maximize the safety of both race participants, volunteers, park employees and visitors, we ask all participants monitor and follow local CDC and the County of Durham recommended protocols while running at Little River Regional Park for this event. And, if you are feeling sick, or under the weather, please stay home for everyone’s health and safety. We appreciate your efforts.

Aid stations for the In-Person Race:
Yes, Aid stations are back. Also, there will be race volunteers/safety monitors on the course as well.
Aid Station for the Hybrid Event:
There will be race staff and/or park staff onsite during park business hours. There will be no volunteers or aid stations on the course or at the finish. Please plan on carrying your own hydration and/or food needs, as well as a cell phone in case of injury or emergency. The park manager’s office is adjacent to the parking lot. See “Tips for running a self-supported race” below for useful and potentially vital information.
Tips for running a self-supported race. Little River Trail Runs happens in January. What this means in North Carolina is that we could have snow (we have, it was pretty), rain (we have, it was muddy), or we could have warm sunshine (we have, and it threw us a bit). Research the temps before you head out to run, particularly if you’re running the 10 mile course, and be prepared. Here are some other useful tips:
• Bring water, even if it’s cold.
o Target 16-30 oz/ hour
• Bring nutrition, particularly if you’re running the 10 mile course.
o Target 100 calories / hour. When its cold, you burn calories faster.
• Nutrition #2: leave something to eat in your car for the finish – there will be no finish line food (we’ll be back next year, fingers crossed!).
• Wear layers.
• If you are running in the afternoon, take a headlamp. It gets dark faster than you think, especially in the woods.
• Bring a cellphone or some method to communicate in case of emergency or injury. In the case of a serious injury, call 911. For other issues the park manager’s office number is 919-732-5505.
• Tell a friend when you plan to start and finish or share the trail with them at a safe distance.
• Leave a sign on your car’s dash that states you are running the 10 mile/7k and what time you start to run.
• Know which markings to follow for which race (that is, know the flag color that matches your distance).
• Have a map. We will provide an online GPX map that you can either download or print prior to the start of the race window.
o GPS on trails is not an exact science
o Bring a course map in a baggie so the map won’t get wet in rain
• And, because of Covid…please carry a mask and be prepared to use it if needed on the trail.
• Be prepared for mud on the course….which is fun, but you might want dry socks/shoes and/or a towel for the drive home.
• Take a warm hat in your pack. It’ll feel great when you start cooling down.
• The park closes at 5pm, please make sure your run will be done by 5pm when the gates to the parking lot are closed.
In-Person Race Awards: There will be awards for Overall and Masters M/F winners, along with prizes for the top in each age group.
Hybrid Race Awards: Due to the nature of the hybrid event (i.e., no one will be there to monitor the course, check times, etc.), we will not be awarding prizes for this event.
Packet Pickup (Both Events): If you register for the hybrid event, you will need to pick up your shirt during this window; we will not mail race shirts.
Location: Bull City Running, SoDu location (202 W. NC 54, Durham)
Date: Friday, January 6, 2023
Time: 2:30pm – 6:00pm
Prizes and Sponsors. Big thanks to our sponsors – Bull City Running, Balanced Movement Studios, Carrboro Coffee Roasters, Neal’s Deli and Catering, Open Eye Café, The PurpleBowl, Halchin Honey, and the TrailHeads.
We have provided maps for the 7k and 10 mile courses that reflect past events. Please note that the course(s) on the day you run may differ from these maps due to weather, erosion, or other factors beyond the control of the Park, Organizers, or Sponsors. Hybrid event runners: when in doubt, follow the markings on the course.
