What Is It?
Q. What’s the big deal?
A. Nothing, really. What the Hill?! is simply a stretch of a wee bit of asphalt and a bunch of dirt trails with roughly 200 feet of elevation change per 1-mile loop.
Q. How does it work?
A. The G.O.A.T.z are all about excess. Sometimes it’s in miles, sometimes in hours, and sometimes excess is simply a number. Obviously, you can’t run 1-ish miles and call it a half marathon, but you CAN run 1-ish miles 13 times and call it a half marathon. Yes, that’s right! THIRTEEN times! Really, how hard can it be? Half of it is downhill. Half of it is uphill.
Q. Half-a-Half?
A. Really? Did you ask this question? It’s half of a half marathon or, in What The Hill?! half-a-half terms: 6 laps. A 10k-ish.
Q. Quarter Half?
A. Really? Did you ask this question, too? It’s half of a half of a half marathon or, in What The Hill?! Quarter Half terms: 3 laps. A 5K-ish.
Q. Is the What The Hill?! Half Marathon and Half-a-Half certified?
A. What do you think? Certifiably crazy…maybe. Certified? Uh, no!
Q. Are there any trails involved?
A. There are now! We’d guesstimate 80% trails per 1-mile loop. What the Hill?! is now just 20% soft, bone, and joint-friendly asphalt per loop. (Don’t complain: it used to be 100% asphalt. Gross.)
Q. Why?
A. Because we love Schramm! Plain and simple. An event here helps us introduce road runners who may not be experienced in trail running to the G.O.A.T.z and our mission, and raise money to give back to one of the state parks system’s most beautiful parks.
Q. Is there a cap?
A. Yes. We will have a limit of 200 total runners.
Shirts not guaranteed for registrations after August 1.
