Description:

Founded by long-time locals as a way to keep runners motivated in the dead of winter, it’s a 5k/10k on roads and trails (at the base of Lumpy Ridge) in Estes Park.

The first year, it was run in 18 inches of snow and single digit temperatures, giving race coordinators the motto “We run whatever the weather”. It’s founder, ultrarunner and mountaineer Chip Salaun disappeared on Mount Cook in New Zealand in 1985. If the wind blows, as it often does during the race, we consider it Chip’s spirit pushing us on. We’ll celebrate the 40th this year with a return to the original, awesome, off-road 5k and 10k courses on the historic McGregor Ranch property. Runners are encouraged to run both the 5k and 10k back to back.

This year’s race will go to benefit Chase Murray, a 15-year-old Estes Park Cross Country Team runner recently diagnosed with leukemia.
