11th Annual Wachusett Mountain Road Race

May 24, 2003

Press Release

Clouds and rain can't dampen the race to the summit

The 11th running of the Wachusett mountain road race brought many new
runners as well as the usual suspects to the first race of the USATF New
England Mountain Running Series. As expected, defending men's winner
Eric Morse and several other members of the powerful Central Mass
Striders men's open team toed the starting line. The Cambridge Sports
Union, always well represented at Wachusett, brought many familiar faces
in Suzy West, Rob Bradlee, Donna Smyth and Lisa & Jamie Doucett. BAA
standout Sean Livingston brought fellow club member Terrance Shea to the
mountain for the second year in a row.

Fresh from back to back wins at the Merrimack River Trail race and the 7
Sisters Trail Race, 2002 Male Mountain of the Year Paul Low crossed the
finish line first in a time of 24:50. Eric Morse and Richard Bolt
finished 2nd and 3rd in times of 25:03 and 25:25 respectively. On the
women's side, Teva US Mountain Running Team member Suzy West won in a
time of 31:22 followed by Kara Haas in 31:41 and Wayland High School
senior Evelyn Dong in 33:04.

In spite of the cool temperatures in the 50's and drizzly conditions,
most runners seemed to enjoy the race. Once again, the Central Mass
Striders did an excellent job organizing this race, and with the generous
support of the Wachusett Mountain Ski Resort, everyone had a warm and dry
place to hangout before and after the race. Also providing support for
the runners was the Red Bull Mobile Energy Team handing out free cans of
Red Bull energy drink.

Next on the schedule for those following the USATF New England Mountain
